From Nature to Nurture ~ Understanding your coachee’s nature to enhance your coaching impact

We are pleased to share an article entitled “From Nature to Nurture ~ Understanding your coachee’s nature to enhance your coaching impact“ written by Antoine Eid.

I’ve repeatedly heard the words “understand,” “discover,” “align” and “impact” as the foundations of great coaching. I’ve also learned through my conversations with coaches that most “discovering” comes from prompting the coachee for reflection on their situation and self-perception.

But what if there was something else to “discover”? Something that unveils a significant truth often overlooked in the relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth?

How much do you know about a client’s innate predispositions before designing your coaching approach?

INNATE MOTIVATORS

Most of us are conditioned to be “good enough” – good enough for demanding parents, for a perfect God, or for inspiring teachers and role models. We are programmed to focus on fixing weaknesses and filling gaps, taking on an endless, sometimes exhausting journey of self-improvement.

While a growth mindset is valuable, it often overlooks the fundamental need to understand one’s intrinsic nature – the unique blend of talents, preferences and innate motivators each individual possesses.

COACHING ALIGNMENT

True development is not just about acquiring new “understanding,” skills and behaviors; it is about aligning growth trajectory with natural predispositions. Before deciding on a coaching approach, it is imperative to explore and understand innate motivators. These motivators serve as a compass, guiding individuals towards fulfillment, success, and purpose.

Imagine an individual with a natural inclination towards creativity being pushed into a role that primarily demands analytical thinking. They might achieve high proficiency, but the lack of passion and sustainable motivation can lead to burnout and dissatisfaction.

Conversely, helping them discover and nurture their creative talents aligns their work with their passion, fuelling drive and motivation.
