Coach Well-Being & Ongoing Personal & Professional Development Supervision as a remedy for our VUCA world through alignment, awareness and action

We are pleased to share an article entitled “Beyond Changing Mindsets, Heal Hearts” by Katie Drescher.

The intersection of ongoing coach development and coaches’ attention to their own well-being is a hot topic of discussion as the world is changing at an ever-increasing rapid pace, economic uncertainty looms and artificial intelligence is becoming more and more prevalent across the coaching profession.

Coaches around the globe are equally impacted by the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times we live in; however, some areas of the planet offer more support for ongoing coach support and attention to well-being than others. Coaches in North America are just beginning to adopt on a wider scale what our European, United Kingdom and other global colleagues have benefitted from for quite some time: the value and benefit of coaching supervision as a reflective, restorative, and resourcing space to nurture their well-being as coach for ongoing personal and professional development.

For many ICF trained and credentialed coaches, early in the coach journey, the value of mentoring is introduced and continues to be a vital part of their path to coaching mastery while supervision has a quieter presence. The voices calling for more widespread offering and adoption of supervision are getting louder and ICF has recently announced approval for coaches to earn 10 CCEU’s through Coaching supervision per credential renewal period. This development opens the door to wider support for coaches around the world who carry an ICF credential.

It is an exciting time to be a coach serving as part of the cadre of humans acting in support of individuals and organizations vexed with discerning their path forward during these years of rapid change. And now support for you as the helper is at hand through supervision is supported by all the dominant credentialing organizations.

I invite you as a member of the team of helpers to take a moment now to self-reflect as you ponder supervision and how it fits into your practice whether you are new to the idea supervision, or it is a well-established part of your coaching life. I offer you consideration of the words alignment, awareness and action. Take each word one at a time and reflect on any of the following questions that resonate with you.

ALIGNMENT Thinking about yourself as a coach. What are your visions for your future? Are you aligned with how you want to show up as a coach? Are your actions aligned with your goals and values? What is missing? What might you want to add or let go of?

AWARENESS Where do you experience expanded vision? How does it show up in your life? How does it show up in your coaching sessions? What do you notice brings you awareness? Is it quiet space for reflection?  Do you recognize metaphors as a way your inner knowing, creativity, imagination is sparked? What is happening somatically for you when you have a new awareness? How do you experience silence in your life?

ACTION What needs to be done? Who do you want to reach out to? What will support you as a person, coach, and many other roles you play in your life? Are you actioning your vision for your future? What’s your preferred outcome for today? This week? Month and year? How do you want to take care of yourself?
